Getting A Puppy For Christmas?

Clan Clark's Sir Odin with Christmas lights.

I wanted to post a reminder as we go into the holiday season… some are thinking about getting a puppy or kitten for a gift for themselves or a loved one. PLEASE, please…Do your research!

If at all possible, do your research BEFORE you buy your puppy. Take the time to research what breed is a good fit for you and/or your family. Then find a reputable breeder of the breed you have chosen. Ask questions, visit, talk on the phone, ask more questions, find out all you can so you will be prepared for the next 2 years of puppy antics and the next 10 to 16 years of dog ownership. Please, DO NOT buy from a pet store or from someone who has a dog that just “got pregnant.” Without knowing the breeder or the puppy’s parents you are setting yourself up for a lot of possible problems…pet stores buy their puppies from puppy brokers who get them from puppy mills. You can avoid many health issues and temperament problems by getting you new puppy from someone who really LOVES the breed you are interested in.

If you would rather get your pup from a rescue, instead of a breeder, that can be a good option too…but…AGAIN…PLEASE…do your research!
It is an unfortunate fact that there are getting to be more and more ‘rescues’ out there who are getting, buying or taking dogs from puppy mills and private parties just to resell them under the guise of being a ‘rescue’. This type of action makes a LOT money for them AND keeps the puppy mills in business!

Be very careful when you are choosing your family’s companion for the next 10 to 15 years.
